Holy Mother of May

Holy Mother of May

The month of May crashed onto the scene with a hard thump of holyshitthereissomuchgoingon!

I had to step away from the blog for a second.

But I'm back just in time for the grand finale - kids are out of school, first recital, and kindergarten graduation. And then in will be June. One of my favorite months! Why? Because it's my birthday month. And because school is out and we all get to sleep in every day. But don't tell my daughter that or she will make a point to wake up every day before the sun comes up. Let's keep it our little secret.

Before the grand May finale, let's revisit what is making May such a crazy shit storm, shall we?

I actually had to go through the pictures on my phone to jog my memory. All I could find was food. Because for the month of May all I've done is eat.

Cinco de Mayo:

Those are shrimp tacos with avocado and cilantro-lime cauliflower "rice." Not sure if you got the quotes but it's not really rice it's cauliflower. Get it? And it's healthy and delicious. Here's the recipe. You're welcome.

Then my dad came to town! I haven't seen him in four years so it was a big deal. So we celebrated our long weekend by eating through it.

Vegetarians and Vegans, look away.

Menu:

Friday - Rib Eyes
Saturday - Carne Asada
Sunday - Smoked Brisket
Monday - I can't even remember but there was meat involved.
Tuesday - The Parish Burger. It has bacon and blue cheese and Dijon mustard and other magical things on it.

And you know how when family comes in to town all you do is eat? Well, we're no different. It was a dinner at my Gramma's house, a dinner at our house, a dinner at my aunt's house, lunch here, dinner there, eat...eat...eat!
My homemade guacamole with blue chips.

I'm not complaining, though. Not at all. That's what I love about family visits. All the eating and visiting malls. You don't visit malls when family comes to town or when you go visit family in other cities? We somehow always end up there. It's awesome!

Oh, yeah, and then there was a little thing called MOTHER'S DAY that happened. Happy Mother's Day to all! I hope your family made you feel special.

I'm pretty up front about what I want on Mother's Day. I think it's a bad idea to think your significant other will just know what to do. A baaaaad idea. Years ago I would begrudgingly get up and make my own damn french toast with a dash of cinnamon, resentment, and hate fire. But then I did this thing called communication and I told him what I wanted and guess what! I get french toast made for me! And doughnuts. 'Cause I love me some cheap doughnuts. It's a weakness.

I was also showered with love and gifts, which is my favorite.

We had my mom over, who helped us transfer our budding cilantro and basil to the bigger garden. And then later we went to Gramma's for more swimming and...eating! My Mother's Day ended with a small binge of House of Cards with husband, which is also one of my favorite things to do. P.S. He even cleaned up the Mother's Day dishes, which is a first. Maybe he is a mind reader!

Oh, yeah, and little Miss Lola wears earrings now! I had her ears pierced by the pediatrician when she was three months old. It was fine until she was about a year and a half old and she started pulling them out. And eating them. I found one in her diaper one day and that was the last day she wore them. Fast forward to recently, I asked if I could feel Lola's ears because the holes looked like they were still there. She finally let me and, surprisingly, it felt like the tunnels were still there, too. So we tried to put an earring through them and it went through! We were then off to the mall for Grampa to get her some new earrings!

She chose pink dolphins, purple flowers, and ballet slippers for her recital. And the best news out of all of this is that she doesn't have to go get them repierced!!!

Speaking of ballet slippers, her very first ballet and tap recital is Saturday and I can't wait! Everything about having a little girl culminates on stage in a blue tutu this Saturday night with ballet slipper earrings.

But before that, we have kindergarten graduation! It's kind of a big deal seeing as how my son almost died almost five years ago and here we are getting ready for him to graduate kindergarten. That will be a whole blog post by itself.

So, yeah, I guess you could say May is busy. And sometimes when family is in town and awesome, fun, milestone events are happening, I don't want to miss a second. I've learned that even though family get togethers on the back patios with beers and limes in hand are totally and completely picture worthy, I'd sometimes like to just be in the moment rather than snap the perfect pictures or write the perfect blog post. Besides, sometimes an instagram pic with a sweet filter still just doesn't do the moment justice.
