In Defense of Elf on the Shelf: Our Elf on the Shelf Journey

In Defense of Elf on the Shelf:

Our Elf on the Shelf Journey

This was the first year we participated in Elf on the Shelf shenanigans. Despite all the nay-saying and elf haters, I was so excited to participate this year.

When we got her Lola promptly named her Kara. I have no idea why or where she got that name but she offered it up quickly like it was sitting in her back pocket.

Meet Kara.

She even managed to make it over to Nana's for a sleepover and got oatmeal all over the place!

She got a hold of our Ben's Bell and came in like a wreeeeecking baaaall!

Bens Bells

It was all the flamingo's idea.

Where's Kara?

Everyone needs a toilet paper hammock.

Daddy got involved one night.

Cookie Crisps

Happy Birthday, Lola!

Shenanigans.

Solo cup elf.

Everyone loves Costco pizza.

She got into Momma's make up. Which led to Lola getting into it. Then a whole blush situation all over my face when she asked if she could put it on me. Seriously, people asked me if I was sunburned.

And she's almost ready to go!

Christmas Eve Kara the Elf will be flying back to the North Pole as the story goes.

I have had so much fun doing this. Yeah, I said it. There is so much anti-elf propaganda out there and there's been a rise in anti-elf hate groups as of late. I thought I'd come to the defense of the Elf on the Shelf.

It's fun! Get over it!

If you don't want to do Elf on the Shelf, then don't. If your elf wants to simply move from one place to another, fine. If your elf doesn't move at all and sits and watches Duck Dynasty or Real Housewives of Atlanta or whatever,  great.

But what is the deal with all the elf hate? Guess what, I had so much fun doing it. I was actually having fun creating new situations for the elf to get into. Sometimes I had a more complicated idea. Sometimes I just moved her. One night I forgot and got up and moved it in the morning before she woke up. But I was having fun playing with her toys. And playing with toys is not something I do often.

The best part? That was every morning when Lola woke up and the first thing she wanted to do was go find Kara. And when she'd find her she would clap her hands and squeal, "I found Kara!" And then she would sit down and play with the toys involved in some of Kara's "scenes" because she saw them in a different way.

Maybe I won't be so enthusiastic next year. Maybe I'll be overly enthusiastic. Maybe I'll tattoo a picture of the elf on my arm. Who cares? Just end the elf hate. You're saving lives. (Not really.)

  1. For me, the eyes weird me out. BUT we did it because I knew my daughter would love it. And she does. This was our first year. It's still creepy to me and I don't go all out, but it's worth it to see the smile on her face when she sees what Meredith the Elf is doing next. But I won't be sad to see her go tomorrow.

  2. I love all of the fun that Kara had this month - I'm sure that your daughter loved the fun!!!
I'm happy that my boys are older and we don't do the elf but that is because we usually go to bed at the same time as the boys and I would never remember - plus I'm very uncreative.
I enjoy seeing what other people's elves get into.

  3. I wish this had come out about 10 years ago - I sure would have loved it, and so would my son! He's in college now, so not so much any more.... :(
