Momma Candy of the Week: Pollo, Pumpkin Pie, and Putting Baby in a Corner

Momma Candy of the Week:

Pollo, Pumpkin Pie, and Putting Baby in a Corner

I was all set to find the candy in this strange week. Some of which was sitting in one of my favorite glasses I bought in Mexico- a cranberry lime vodka. Kids were asleep, grocery shopping was done, husband was occupied. All planets were aligning when suddenly my candy of a drink slipped out of my hand and crashed to the concrete floor. Busted. And it was almost full, too. Tragedy.

I didn't make another one because the whole thing pissed me off. But I'm rallying because I think it might do me some good to seek out the good stuff from this not so ordinary week.

Welcome to Momma Candy of the Week!

Super exciting news. We have a kindergartner in the house. This is kind of extra special because, as I may have mentioned, my five year old has some pretty hard core special needs. In fact, he almost died four years ago. So the mere fact that he had a first day of kindergarten is so totally, over the top, amazing for me that it took me all week to get my head on straight. Especially with the whole "getting up early" thing.

And so far it has been a beautiful situation. Everything has been easier from the drop off to the transition.

Kindergarten is tiring. Gawd, he is so cute I can't even stand it sometimes!

What's binge watching, you ask?

Well, it's when you marathon a show. I'm using "marathon" as a verb here. It's one of my favorite things to do as a family. You can also do this with movies, too. It's done preferably when it's overcast or rainy outside. We close all the blinds, turn off all the lights, eat popcorn and other foods that are terrible for us. And we watch.

We don't do this a lot. It's rare that everyone in the family would have the kind of time to devote to this kind of thing all at the very same time. So when it does happen, it's a treat.

What did we binge on? Breaking Bad. We heard the hype. We put it off as long as we could. But it was time to hop on the bandwagon. And what better time then right before the final episodes start airing tomorrow?

So we signed up for Netflix. And let me just be clear when I say I wasn't a fan of Netflix binging. It frustrates me to no end when I start to talk to someone about a show and they're not watching in real time. I can't even have a conversation with you if you're going to watch a TV series like that. And, no, I won't hold back in spoiling anything for you until you catch up to the rest of us. You're a grown adult, order your dish or cable or whatever service like the rest of us sheeple.

Okay, fine, I get it now. After two weeks of binge watching Breaking Bad, I get the whole no commercials, no cliffhangers, have it all at once thing everyone gets so hooked on. But once you catch up could you please just watch it in real time so we can have a conversation about it. K, thanks.

By the way, I have no idea how we'll manage watching Breaking Bad in real time. We have to wait a whole week to find out what happens? What's that about?

After that tangent, the candy in all this is that it was a lot of fun doing it, we're hooked, and we can't wait to watch the premiere tomorrow.

Netflix is cool.

No, not Pollo Hermanos (reference to the above). It's Pollo Loco here in the Southwest and I don't know if you have it where you live but it's one of my favorite fast food places. I think it was on some kind of list for healthy fast food eateries. You get like eight pieces of chicken, rice, beans, a family salad, eight tortillas and four churros. FOUR CHURROS. Just go for the churros, if you must. All for $20. Feeds the whole family. Twice.

Pollo Loco

And, just in case you're wondering, no El Pollo Loco isn't sponsoring this nod. They're not even affiliates. I just like 'em. But if they wanted to pay me in churros and street tacos, I totally wouldn't mind. Chips and guac, too.

Look what I picked up at the store tonight.

kroger pumpkin pie

Yes, there is a piece missing. And? Maybe it came like that. You don't know.

Of course, I got excited when I saw the pumpkin pies stacked up in the bakery section of the grocery store. And, of course, I had to buy one. Not because pumpkin pie is my favorite. But because it means fall is coming.

But then I thought, is it really time for this? Is it really autumn? I know the retailers have a ton of money to make after the summer lull but it's just the beginning of August! I am even slightly brainwashed. I caught myself questioning whether I should still wear my shorty shorts, what, with autumn just around the corner.

But then I said - Self, you're crazy! It'll be 100 degrees here for the next two months! Put your shorts on!

I still bought the pie, though. Just so I could pretend. It's good for the economy. 'Murica.

It wasn't just a declutter, guys. It was like a reorganization, hanging stuff on walls, dusting, mopping kind of clean. It was awesome. I even cleaned out the junk cupboard.

Shameful. Even more so because most of that stuff went right back in the cupboard. Only organized this time.

It felt so good to have a clean house for the five whole minutes that it lasted. (See full glass of alcoholic beverage hitting floor and shattering above.)

Some girlfriends and I are going to a summer classics screening of Dirty Dancing. I am so excited. I've only been obsessed with this movie since I was little. I forced my cousin to learn the dance steps in the closing portion of the movie with me and I'm only admitting that now.

But can I just say a little part of my heart hurts that it's considered a "Summer Classic?" Whoever decided that should pay for my sody-pop and popcorn. Seeing as how I'm a senior citizen and all.

Happy weekend! Happy Breaking Bad! Happy Dirty Dancing!

What was your candy of the week?

  1. Great Post! Glad you're little boy is having such an easy transition! Hope it continues to do well!

Never saw Breaking Bad, but may look into it.

    Pumpkin Pie is Awesome!
And I did the same thing in my house the other day! Felt great when I was finished!

    1. Pumpkin pie is so good! But it had to be done right. I don't like when it's the consistency canned pumpkin. It tastes raw to me. This pie wasn't that great. Probably because its August!

  2. Congrats on having a kindergartener in the house. As a parent of a child with special needs myself I know what that achievement means. btw love that Pumpkin pie. It's one of my favorite as well and it wouldn't have lasted long enough for me to take a pic of. :)

    1. It's true! Such an amazing moment dropping him off for his first day of kindergarten!

  3. Congrats on having a Kindergartener! :)

Total Breaking Bad addict here! We watched all of the episodes on Netflix, as well. And real time watching with commercials and waiting a week? What??? It sucks. We love Netflix because we hate commercials and are completely impatient! We're also watching Weeds right now and have watched almost the whole series.

    Have an awesome week!

  4. I'm so glad both you and your little guy made it through the first week of Kindergarten and came out smiling...and yes Netflix is a wonderful thing but you get spoiled to the no commercial bliss and being able to get the whole story all at once. Then the waiting become terrible. I haven't watched Breaking Bad just yet but I have heard all the hype recently so that may just be my next 'marathon' watch. :D

    1. I know! Now that we're watching in real time we need our fix so we're rewarding the season 1 and 2. We are nuts!

I love all your comments, big and small! Unless they're mean. Nobody likes a meanie.
