Valentine's Day Food and Booze

Valentine's Day Food and Booze

My weekend was filled with zombies. Seriously. We watched the Walking Dead marathon leading right up to the mid season premiere tonight.

Productive, right?

Well, this happened, too...

Isn't she pretty?

That's a margarita with a Coronita top off. I think it's called a Beergarita. I don't know because I just ask for the giant margarita with the beer inside and they bring me this beauty.

Hubby and I had date night on Saturday and we went to one of our favorite places to eat and have drinks. I'm kind of considering it our Valentine's date because we really don't like going out on Valentine's Day. We've tried that before and it was a bad idea because everyone goes out on Valentine's Day.

So what are we doing on Valentine's Day?

I've always seen Valentine's Day as a family holiday. It's more fun and less pressure that way. I'll probably bake for the kids and make them treats so today I pined through Pinterest looking for treats to make that are easy, require very few ingredients, very few steps, and that taste yummy.

Ha! Did you think I was going to say healthy? Wrong Mom. At least not when it comes to desserts.

Anyway, today I sat down to plan food and meals for the week (yes, I meal plan, it's one of the few organized things I do) I thought about what we would eat on Valentine's Day.

Is it just me or are there certain types of food you associate with holidays?

For example, it's pretty common to have turkey on Thanksgiving, maybe a roast or another turkey on Christmas or whatever. Ham on Easter. Cornbeef and cabbage for St. Paddy's Day.

I know some people do black eyed pees for New Year's, but we have a tradition of eating Chinese food every New Year's.

And for Valentine's Day, I think Italian. Maybe it's the whole romance language-Lady and the Tramp-romance of Italian food with wine that makes me think Valentine's Day. So I was all set to make my favorite baked ziti dish or lasagna.

But then I thought about the first dinner my husband ever made for me. He called it Sopes. They're basically little fried cornmeal cakes filled with meat, refried beans, lettuce, salsa, and sour cream.

They looked just like this:

As I mentioned, it was the very first meal he ever made for me and it was love at first bite. Cheesy? Yes. Delicious? Absolutely.

So, even though I love Italian food and wine and associate it with Valentine's Day, I thought it would be even better to ask the husband to whip these babies up. Just for old time's sake.

We're foregoing Italian for Mexican food.

And maybe another margarita.

Do you associate specific types of food with different celebrations or holidays?

What food do you associate with Valentine's Day?

You can say chocolate. It's okay.

And have you entered my giveaway yet? You still have time!
